Andamooka Opal, as featured on Outback Opal Hunters and mined near Andamooka in Australia,.
Andamooka Opal is limestone full of opal crystals but due to the limestone being so very very pale it is often difficult to see the play of opal colour in the stone and hence a method of darkening the limestone background was developed so the colour of the opal could be seen. So, this fabulous mineral is boiled for hours in sugar until it is absorbed into the pores of the limestones and then is boiled in sulphuric acid. This reacts with the sugar turning it to carbon which is black. The limestone becomes considerably darker, anywhere from brown to black, and allows us to see the opal (which is unaffected by tis treatment) within the limestone.
This piece is dark grey with shimmering green and gold opal across the front face which also displays a "Black Moon" where no opal had formed.
At 140 carats this piece measures 55 x 23 x 12 mm
