Lapis Lazuli is a metamorphic rock composed principally of lazurite, with calcite and pyrite among its other common components. It has been highly prized throughout history for its vivid blue colour and was ground to produce ultramarine, one of the most valuable blue pigments used by artists before the development of synthetic alternatives.
